The Smartest Saving in the Kitchen

Refrigeration is the one bit of kit that never switches off. It runs every hour of every day, holds your stock, and fails at the worst possible moment. New units are dear and getting dearer, so buying used commercial refrigeration is the easiest money a UK kitchen can save. A quality used upright that cost £2,500 new will often change hands for under a grand with years of life left in it.

The catch is that a fridge can look spotless and still be a bill wearing a stainless steel suit. A tired compressor or a phased out refrigerant turns a bargain into a running cost you cannot escape. This guide covers what to buy, what to check, what it is worth, and what it costs to run, from someone who has spent 25 years in commercial kitchens.

Know What You Are Buying

Used refrigeration equipment covers far more than a stand up fridge. Get the type right for the job before you look at price.

  • Uprights and undercounters: The workhorses. Single or double door, fridge or freezer. Check the door count matches your covers, not your ego.
  • Prep counters and saladettes: Gastronorm wells in the top, storage under. Measure your pan sizes first, a counter that will not take your GN containers is useless.
  • Display fridges and cabinets: Front of house glass. Strong secondhand, but the glass, lighting and seals age fast, so inspect them closely.
  • Blast chillers: Bring cooked food through the danger zone fast and keep the EHO happy. Expensive new, real value used, but only buy one that comes with proof it still hits temperature.
  • Plate freezers and cold storage: For volume operations. Plate freezers and walk in cold storage are heavy and often three phase, and a job to move, so factor the logistics in before you commit.
  • Industrial and pack refrigeration: Remote condensing packs feeding cold rooms. Serious kit for serious sites. Only buy with service history and a clear idea of the refrigerant inside.

What to Check Before You Pay

A fridge either holds temperature cheaply or it does not. These are the fast checks. For the full inspection, read our deep dive on what to actually check before you hand over a penny.

  • Temperature proof: Ask the seller to run it and show you a thermometer reading. A unit that will not pull down to temperature in front of you never will.
  • The compressor: Listen to it. Steady hum is good, rattles and short cycling are bad. The compressor is the heart, and replacing one rarely makes sense on a used buy.
  • Door seals and hinges: Perished seals let the cold out and your bill up. Cheap to replace, but use them to knock the price down.
  • The data plate: Photograph it. It tells you the model, the power draw and the refrigerant, which brings us to the part most buyers miss.

What It Costs to Run

The purchase price is the cheap bit. A fridge you own for eight years costs far more to power than to buy, so running cost is where the real money sits.

  • The refrigerant: Older units run gases like R404A that are being phased down and cost a fortune to top up. Modern units on R290 are cheaper and greener. Check the data plate and price the difference in.
  • Compressor age and efficiency: An old compressor works harder for the same cold. A newer, efficient unit can pay back its price in electricity over a couple of years.
  • Seals and airflow: Worn seals and a grease choked condenser make the unit run flat out. Both are cheap to sort and both hammer your energy bill if you leave them.

Selling Your Refrigeration

Idle refrigeration is cash sat in the corner. If you have upgraded or closed a section, sell it while it still runs.

  • Sell it working: A fridge you can plug in and prove holds temperature sells faster and for more money than one sat dead in a yard.
  • Clean it and photograph the plate: A deep clean and a clear data plate photo do half the selling for you. On CaterBids, photograph the data plate and CaterBot pulls the specs, dimensions and a pallet delivery quote back automatically, so you are not sat typing out a listing.
  • Price it honestly: Real condition, real photos, real price. That is how you list an item that actually sells instead of gathering messages.

What Used Commercial Refrigeration Is Worth

Age drives the price more than anything. As a rough guide against the new price: under 2 years old, 50 to 65 percent. Two to 5 years, 30 to 45 percent. Five to 8 years, 15 to 30 percent. Over 8 years, 10 to 15 percent and priced on condition alone. A Foster or Williams holds value better than a budget badge, and full service history moves you to the top of every band.

Moving It Without Killing the Compressor

Refrigeration does not travel like a table.

  • Keep it upright: The oil must stay in the compressor. Lay a fridge down and you risk killing it before it is even plugged in.
  • Let it settle: Once stood in place, leave it 4 to 24 hours before powering on so the oil drains back.
  • Palletise it properly: Heavy duty wrap, strapped to a pallet, tail lift for anything big. Our pallet delivery guide walks you through it.

Your Refrigeration Checklist

  • Measure the space, the doorway and your GN pan sizes
  • See it running and get a thermometer reading
  • Listen to the compressor for rattles or short cycling
  • Photograph the data plate and check the refrigerant
  • Price it against the age bands above
  • Confirm it can be moved upright and palletised
  • Keep any service records for resale later

Buy the right unit and check it properly and you save thousands. Sell your idle kit while it runs and you turn dead metal into cash. That is the whole game: BUY • SELL • SAVE, with zero final value fees when you sell through CaterBids.
